Most flights from Germany to India connect through one of three Gulf hubs: Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), or Abu Dhabi (Etihad). Each hub has different pros and cons depending on your layover length, comfort priorities, and final destination in India.
Dubai (DXB) — Emirates: Biggest Hub, Best for Long Layovers
Dubai International is the world's busiest international airport and Emirates' home base. Terminal 3, used exclusively by Emirates, is vast and well-equipped with over 160 restaurants, lounges, and a hotel for long layovers. For layovers under 2 hours, the size of DXB can actually be a disadvantage — transfers between concourses require a shuttle train and can feel rushed. For layovers of 3 hours or more, Dubai is excellent. The airport is 24-hour, the lounges are world-class (for business/first passengers), and there is a wide variety of food options. Recommended layover duration: 2.5–6 hours.
Doha (DOH) — Qatar Airways: Most Modern Hub, Tight Connections Possible
Hamad International Airport in Doha opened in 2014 and is consistently rated among the world's top airports. It is notably smaller and more compact than DXB, which makes short connections (90 minutes+) easier and less stressful. The airport has excellent retail and dining, and the iconic giant teddy bear sculpture in the main terminal is hard to miss. Qatar Airways' Al Mourjan lounge in Doha is considered one of the world's best airport lounges for business class passengers. For economy travellers on tight connections, Doha is the most forgiving of the three hubs. Recommended layover duration: 1.5–5 hours.
Abu Dhabi (AUH) — Etihad: Least Crowded, Smoothest Experience
Abu Dhabi airport is the smallest of the three Gulf hubs and noticeably less congested than Dubai or Doha. This translates to faster immigration (if required), shorter queues at gates, and a generally calmer transit experience. Etihad uses Terminal A, which is a modern facility opened in 2023. For travellers who find large airports stressful, Abu Dhabi is the most relaxed transit experience. The trade-off is fewer lounge and dining options compared to DXB or DOH. Recommended layover duration: 1.5–4 hours.
Which Hub Is Best for Your Indian Destination?
All three hubs serve the major Indian metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata. For South Indian cities like Kochi, Kozhikode, or Thiruvananthapuram, Emirates via Dubai often has the most frequent connections. For Ahmedabad, all three carriers have good coverage. For Northeast India or smaller tier-2 cities, you will generally need an onward domestic connection regardless of hub — in which case, prioritise the hub with the best fare.
Missed Connection: What Happens?
If your inbound flight to the hub is delayed and you miss your connection, the airline is responsible for rebooking you on the next available flight at no cost. All three airlines (Emirates, Qatar, Etihad) have good track records for handling missed connections. To reduce risk, book both legs on the same airline (same booking reference) rather than combining separate tickets — that way, the airline is legally obligated to get you to your final destination if a delay on their end causes you to miss the connection.
