Which Level Do You Need?
Zero German. Greetings, basic phrases, numbers. Required for family reunion visa spouse.
Simple daily conversations. Shopping, directions, work basics.
Independent user. Required for permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) and citizenship.
Required for doctors, nurses and some regulated professions in Germany.
University-level German. Needed for German-taught university programs.
Near-native fluency. Highest level — relevant for academic and senior roles.

BAMF Integration Courses — Free or Subsidised
If you hold a residence permit, you may be entitled to attend a state-funded Integration Course (Integrationskurs) — 600 hours of German language (A1–B1) plus 100 hours of civic orientation, either free or at a reduced rate of €1.20 per lesson.
