EU Blue Card Germany โ€” Complete Guide for Indians

The EU Blue Card is Germany's premier skilled worker visa for non-EU nationals. Here's everything Indian professionals need to know.

What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU) is a work and residence permit for highly qualified non-EU workers. It offers faster permanent residence, better mobility within the EU, and easy family reunification โ€” making it the top choice for Indian IT and engineering professionals.

Salary Requirements in 2025

You need a job offer paying at least โ‚ฌ45,300 gross per year for regular occupations. For shortage occupations (IT, engineering, doctors, nurses), the threshold is reduced to โ‚ฌ35,300 per year. These thresholds are updated annually.

Degree Recognition

Your Indian degree must be recognised in Germany. Check the anabin database (anabin.kmk.org) to see if your university and degree are listed. IITs, NITs, and most central universities are generally recognised. If not listed, you can apply for individual recognition through the relevant German authority.

Path to Permanent Residence

Blue Card holders can apply for permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) after just 33 months of employment. This reduces to 21 months if you hold a B1 German language certificate. This is significantly faster than the standard 5-year path.

Family Reunification

Your spouse can join you immediately with a family reunion visa. Unlike the standard family reunion visa, your spouse does NOT need to demonstrate A1 German skills before coming โ€” they can learn German after arrival. Your spouse is also immediately allowed to work in Germany.
