Who Can Sponsor?
If you hold a valid German residence permit (work visa, Blue Card, or permanent residence), you can sponsor your spouse and minor children (under 18). The sponsor must demonstrate stable income and adequate housing.
The A1 German Requirement
In most cases, your spouse must demonstrate A1 German language skills at the German embassy interview. The Goethe Institut has centres across India offering A1 courses and exams. However, this requirement is waived if you hold an EU Blue Card, are a highly qualified professional, or your spouse is an academic.
Children
Minor children under 16 can generally join without a language requirement. Children between 16 and 18 require basic German skills. Once in Germany, children are enrolled in school and typically learn German rapidly.
Processing Time
Expect 3–6 months for family reunion visa processing. The German embassy in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad) handles appointments. Book early as slots fill up quickly.
